First exciting event of the '08 election for me - VP Palin

Thursday night, I did not sleep well.  Dreams of McCain's veep choice swirled in my head.  I had been up late, checking the consensus of the pundits on who it might be.  Just a hint would put me at ease.  This was all on the heels of watching (all I could stomach of) the DNC coverage.

My own choice, Mitt Romney, did not enthuse me.  "Another rich white guy," would be the dem's description of that pick.  What would Mitt bring to the ticket?  Economic experience, a great speaker and debater, a presidential looking man.  Romney would have fit perfectly in my eyes.  However, he is rich and white.  The lefties would rip that ticket as the status quo for the GOP.

As the evening wore on, there was quite a buzz about Pawlenty from Minnesota.  Yawn.  Where was the strategy in that?

I saw Palin's name, in passing, as a dark horse candidate.  Her name had made a few of the prediction sites, but nothing serious.  "Tapping Palin as veep would be a brilliant move, but I doubt McCain would do something so bold,"  I remember thinking.

As I drifted in and out of sleep, I remember waking up dissapointed that it would be Pawlenty.  I kept seeing the letter P in my slumber.  Maybe it was an omen.  Maybe it was the ice cream I had eaten...

There were no leaks or real rumors Friday morning on the usual web sites.  As I made my way to work,  I scanned my satellite radio channels for any tidbits.  Governor Palin's name was more prevalent.  The more I heard about her, the more I liked the thought of her being the choice.  She is a lifetime NRA member, a former commercial fisherman, has five kids, pro-life, hunter, stands up to corruption, etc.

I tuned in to Neal Boortz on a terrestrial station when I got to work, since I can't pick up XM channels there.  Lots of names were bandied about.  Many other topics were discussed.  I was on pins and needles.  Around 10 AM, Neal announced that CNN was reporting that it was Palin.  Brilliant!  The breakroom tv was usually tuned to the Discovery channel or CNBC.  I commandeered the remote and went straight to FoxNews.  It was official, it was indeed Palin!

The more I hear about Sarah, the more I know this was a bold and brilliant pick.  McCain has redeemed himself.  Now, let's see if she can sway him on the border and ANWR.
